HISTORY OF BARANGAY CATAMBOAN

Barangay Catamboan is a community within the municipality of Larena, Siquijor. As of the 2020 Census, it has a population of 545 residents, representing approximately 3.77% of Larena’s total population.

The etymology of “Catamboan” is linked to the Cebuano term “tambo,” which means “to look outside.” Historically, this term was associated with the practice of vigilantly watching for Moro pirates along the coastlines.

In the early 20th century, administrative changes led to the merging of Canoan with Larena. By the 1918 census, only Larena was listed in official records, indicating the consolidation of these municipalities.

Today, Catamboan stands as a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Siquijor, reflecting both its historical significance and the enduring traditions of its people.


The barangay Catamboan, Larena, Siquijor is located at the South Eastern part of the town. It has 23 barangays part of Municipality of Larena. Barangay Catamboan is one of the part has estimated area of 36.6516 hectares: 1,055.954 Residential: 1,670 Public Land; 2,140 Hilly 81 hectares inside in the barangay it has 136 household total population of 496 and registered voters 431 .

This barangay Divided into 7 sitio’s namely: SITIO KALUBIHAN, SITIO LIBAONG, SITIO DAKONG KAHOY, SITIO BUGANG, SITIO CANGBANGAG, SITIO CENTRO 1 AND 2. One (1) Day Care Center had also a Day Worker. One Health Center with Midwife and her BHWs and BNS to serve the people and assist during check up of every patient.

There are three (3) puroks in the barangay we have purok 1 our President is Mr. Nerio T. Calibo, Purok (2) our President is Vergenia M. Calibo and Purok (3) our President is Mrs. Blesela Palahang.
